Clear Sealer for Exposed Aggregate Driveways in Perth

Why Dulux Avista Exposed Aggregate Sealer differs from General Purpose and Extended Wear — and when Rayco uses each on Perth driveways and paths.

Clear Sealer for Exposed Aggregate Driveways in Perth

Exposed aggregate looks great when the stones catch the light — and tired when the surface goes dull, dusty or stained. A clear sealer is usually the answer. The question is which clear sealer.

Dulux Avista makes three exterior clear acrylics that people often lump together: General Purpose, Extended Wear, and Exposed Aggregate Sealer. They are related family products, but they are not interchangeable. On Perth driveways and paths we match the product to the finish you already have.

What exposed aggregate needs from a sealer

Exposed aggregate is porous stone sitting in a cement matrix. The sealer’s job is to:

  • Enhance the wet look of the stone without yellowing
  • Help reduce staining and dirt pickup in the textured surface
  • Help the slab shed water so it cleans more easily
  • Sit as a protective film that can be maintained over time

That is still a protective sealer, not a waterproofing membrane — more on that in our post on whether concrete sealers are waterproof.

Exposed Aggregate Sealer vs General Purpose vs Extended Wear

Exposed Aggregate Sealer General Purpose Extended Wear
Built for Exposed aggregate driveways and paths Plain and decorative exterior concrete / pavers Same exterior surfaces as GP, when petrol and marking resistance matter more
Finish Semi-gloss / wet look Matt or semi-gloss Semi-gloss
Same-day new pour Yes — within 24 hours of aggregate reveal (then full system timing as specified) Not the same-day product Not the same-day product
Petrol / marking Clear wet-look protection for exposed agg Good marking resistance Improved petrol resistance vs GP; excellent marking resistance
Where we use it Exposed aggregate only (new or cured + prepped) Stamped, stencilled, resurfaced, coloured or plain exterior concrete Driveways that see oil/petrol marks and higher wear

All three are solvent acrylic film sealers for exterior use. None of them belong on a garage floor — that needs an interior coating system.

Why “just use General Purpose” is the wrong default

General Purpose is an excellent all-round clear for many exterior slabs. It is not purpose-built for exposed aggregate the way Avista’s Exposed Aggregate Sealer is.

Exposed Aggregate Sealer is specified for that finish: non-yellowing wet look, and — on new work — the option to seal within 24 hours of reveal. If you miss that window, Dulux guidance routes you back to a proper cure wait (typically minimum 14 days) plus full preparation before sealing.

On an older exposed aggregate driveway in Perth, we still prefer the product named for the surface. Texture, porosity and the look you expect after sealing are different from a smooth stamped or plain slab.

When Extended Wear makes more sense than Exposed Aggregate Sealer

Extended Wear is about duty, not stone type. Dulux positions it for exterior decorative concrete and pavers with highly durable performance and improved petrol resistance compared with General Purpose.

So:

  • Exposed aggregate finish → start with Exposed Aggregate Sealer
  • Plain / stamped / stencilled / resurfaced exterior needing clear protection → General Purpose (matt or semi-gloss)
  • Same exterior family, but petrol marks and heavier wear are the pain point → Extended Wear

If your exposed aggregate also takes heavy driveway traffic and frequent fluid marks, we still assess on site. Product choice follows Dulux Avista guidance for the surface first, then wear profile.

New pour vs old driveway

New exposed aggregate (same day): Exposed Aggregate Sealer can go on within 24 hours of the retarder wash-off / reveal. That early film protects the fresh surface. Follow Dulux cure and overcoating notes for the full system — do not invent shortcuts.

Existing exposed aggregate: Pressure clean, prepare (including acid etch where the surface is unsealed and suitable), confirm moisture is acceptable, then apply typically two coats. Recoat windows are short (around 2–3 hours between coats per Dulux data); foot traffic is often next day; vehicle traffic for these solvent acrylics is commonly around 5 days — always confirm against current TDS and weather on the day.

If old sealer is flaking, whitening or built up after multiple cycles, we talk strip vs reseal, not “another coat over failure.”

Perth conditions that change the result

  • UV and summer heat — film sealers need correct temperature windows and dry concrete
  • Leaf tannin and irrigation overspray — sealing helps, but cleaning habits still matter
  • Steep entries — film sealers can reduce slip resistance; slopes about 1:8 or steeper need careful advice (see non-slip on stairs and entries)

Bottom line

Clear sealing for exposed aggregate is not “any acrylic will do.” Exposed Aggregate Sealer is the Dulux Avista product named for that finish. General Purpose and Extended Wear cover other exterior clear jobs — with Extended Wear stepping up petrol and marking resistance where that is the real problem.

If you are unsure which clear system fits your driveway or path, we assess the surface and specify properly under sealing and coating.

Product names and guidance reflect Dulux Avista Australian product literature. Final specification is always confirmed on site for your concrete and conditions.
