“Which clear sealer is better?” is the wrong question. The better question is: what is your driveway fighting?
For most Perth exterior slabs, Dulux Avista’s two workhorse clear solvent acrylics are General Purpose and Extended Wear. Both protect and enhance. Extended Wear is the one Dulux positions when petrol resistance and marking matter more.
Same family, different duty
Both products are:
- Solvent-based clear film sealers for exterior concrete and many paver jobs
- Suitable for driveways, paths, patios and decorative exterior finishes after assessment
- Exterior only — not for internal floors or garage floors (why that matters)
- Typically applied in two coats, no primer required on suitable bare concrete
- Protective sealers that help reduce staining, dusting and dirt pickup — not waterproofing membranes
| General Purpose | Extended Wear | |
|---|---|---|
| Finish options | Matt or semi-gloss | Semi-gloss |
| Dulux positioning | Durable clear; wet-look enhancement; good marking resistance | Highly durable; improved petrol resistance vs GP; excellent marking resistance |
| UV | Very good (per Dulux) | Very good (per Dulux) |
| Best plain-language fit | Sound exterior slab; you want clear protection and a choice of sheen | Driveway that sees fuel drips, turning marks, heavier outdoor wear |
VOC figures on Dulux data are in a similar high solvent range for both — expect outdoor application, ventilation awareness and trade PPE. They are not the low-odour choice (that conversation is water-based vs solvent).
What “improved petrol resistance” means in real life
Cars drip. Mowers get topped up on the driveway. Someone parks over a spot that used to be oil-stained. Film sealers do not make concrete immortal, but Dulux’s claim for Extended Wear is straightforward: better petrol resistance than General Purpose, plus excellent marking resistance.
In plain language for Perth homeowners:
- If the driveway is mostly weather, UV and general traffic → General Purpose is often enough
- If you already see petrol spots, tyre plasticiser marks, or you know the driveway doubles as a workshop apron outdoors → Extended Wear is usually the clearer match
We still prep first. A premium sealer over dirt, laitance or failing old film fails early — see prep that makes sealers last.
Matt vs semi-gloss (General Purpose)
General Purpose lets you choose matt or semi-gloss. Matt softens glare on large slabs and busy street frontages. Semi-gloss gives more of the classic wet look people associate with sealed concrete.
Extended Wear is positioned as semi-gloss. If you want Extended Wear’s petrol/marking performance and a flatter look, talk to us on site — we will not invent a matt Extended Wear grade that Dulux does not sell.
Exposed aggregate is a third product
If the surface is exposed aggregate, start with Exposed Aggregate Sealer, not a debate between GP and Extended Wear. That product is purpose-built for the stone finish and includes same-day options on new pours within Dulux’s 24-hour reveal window.
Cure and traffic (stated Dulux windows)
For General Purpose and Extended Wear, Dulux literature commonly cites:
- Recoat around 2 hours
- Rain resistance around 2 hours
- Foot traffic around 24 hours
- Vehicle traffic around 5 days
- Full cure in a similar timeframe to vehicle access
Weather, thickness, temperature and site conditions shift real-world timing. We put the working window in your quote and stick to current TDS — we do not invent faster “drive on it tomorrow” promises. More detail: how long before you can drive on a sealed driveway.
Maintenance reality
Solvent acrylic film sealers on exterior concrete are typically inspected and refreshed on roughly a two-year cycle, depending on UV, traffic and wear. That is not a failure of the product — it is how outdoor acrylic films are maintained.
If the film is flaking or whitening, strip vs reseal comes first.
How Rayco chooses on a quote
- Confirm the slab is exterior and sound
- Confirm finish type (plain, decorative, exposed aggregate, previously sealed)
- Ask about petrol, oil and marking history
- Agree sheen (where the product range allows)
- Price prep honestly — it is usually the larger part of longevity
If you want sealing and coating done once properly rather than “any clear sealer,” enquire via sealing and coating.
Based on Dulux Avista Australian product guidance. Always confirm the final system on site for your slab and use.
